Dear Ewha Foundation Colleagues and Friends,

Perhaps it is the season of my life. Perhaps it is the current economic world reality. Perhaps it is a recognition of how blessed life has been and how incredibly grateful I am. Whatever the reason(s) the optic for this Foundation newsletter seems to speak directly to me. I read the stories found here and I ponder:

• How am I making preparation for the distribution of my assets when I die? Is my will up-to-date and have I designated those people and organizations I want to receive property, life insurance, or money from my estate?
• As a middle-class citizen in North America have I become so pre-occupied with our current financial hard times that I fail to remember the plight of those who cannot afford a good education or the necessities of simply sustaining life?
• How can I say thanks to God in tangible, practice ways for the life I’ve been given, the family and friends who sustain me, and the education that nurtured me?

Last year the International Foundation for Ewha Womans University (IFEWU) established the Helen Kim Heritage Society to assist me and others who were asking such questions and were seeking a way to provide for Ewha even after our death. Members who have joined the Society are including in their wills:

• A percentage of their assets
• A specific dollar amount
• The assignment of the proceeds from an insurance policy
• The designation of property, artwork, etc.

To go to the Foundation to be used for scholarships, educational resources, and other needs of Ewha Womans University. The Foundation Office has resource material and people who can help anyone considering these opportunities.

I invite you to read, enjoy and ponder the stories that follow. The Foundation is grateful to all Ewha alumnae, friends, and organizations who contribute to our work in support of a great woman’s university. We hope you will continue to work with us in this very important and rewarding work.

이화국제재단의 친구 및 동료 여러분,

어쩌면 지금 제가 맞고 있는 인생의 시기가 그럴 때여서인지 모릅니다. 아니면 현재 전세계에 닥친 경제적 현실 때문인지도 모릅니다. 어쩌면 삶이란 얼마나 복된 것인지, 나는 또 얼마나 감사한 삶을 살고 있는지 절감하고 있기 때문인지도 모릅니다. 그 이유가 무엇이든 간에 이번 국제재단 소식지가 택한 주제는 제 자신에게 분명한 메세지를 주고 있습니다. 이번 호 이야기를 읽고 저는 다음과 같은 생각을 하였습니다:

• 내가 죽음을 맞았을 떄, 내 재산은 어떻게 처리되도록 준비해둘까? 유언장을 현재의 내 상황에 맞게 바꾸어 놓았는가? 내 가진 것, 생명보험이나 재산이 내가 바라는 사람이나 단체에 전해지도록 분명히 해두었는가?
• 북미주에 사는 중산층인 나는 현재 우리가 겪고 있는 재정적인 어려움에만 너무 관심을 기울인 나머지, 좋은 교육을 받을 수 없는 사람들, 그저 기본적인 것이 없어서 생명을 유지하는 것만도 힘이 드는 사람들, 그런 사람들이 처한 곤경을 잊고 지내는 것은 아닌가?
• 나를 둘러싼 가족과 친구, 나를 키워준 교육, 내게 주어진 삶을 놓고 하나님께 감사하되,구체적이고 가시적인 방법으로 하나님께 감사를 표할 수 있는 길이 무엇인가?

지난 해 이화여자대학교 국제재단은 헬렌킴 헤리티지 소사이어티를 발족하여, 이런 질문을 갖고 있는 사람들을 도와 사후에도 이화를 후원할 수 있는 길을 마련하였습니다. 헬렌킴 헤리티지 소사이어티에 가입하는 분들은 유언서에

• 자산의 일정 비율
• 일정 금액의 현금
• 보험 지급의 지정
• 유산이나 예술품 등의 기부 지정

등을 밝히면서 이화여자대학교를 위한 장학금, 교육을 위한 물적 자원, 기타 학교의 필요에 의한 용도로 쓰이도록 정하시면 됩니다. 국제재단 사무실에 연락하시면, 유증으로 이화를 후원하실 뜻이 있는 분들을 돕기 위하여 최선을 다할 것입니다.

국제재단 이번 소식지에 실린 이야기들을 읽으시고 마음에 두시기 바랍니다. 이화국제재단은 이 탁월한 여자대학, 이화여자대학교를 돕는 모든 동창, 친구, 기관에게 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 이 중요하고도 보람있는 일에 저희와 함께 계속하시기를 바랍니다.
